Drinking Game Commentary @ MAGFest 12!

It's not a Con, it's a Festival! Except when it's a Stock! Or a Gen!

  • Hey howdy hey, all you MAGFesters!

So, we're looking to throw a panel this year. Problem is though, we haven't gotten confirmation yet on whether or not we'll have a slot this year.

The event, a hybrid of MST3K and beer pong, would involve an audience, a special guest, and a really shitty movie: Super Mario Bros the movie!

if we don't end up getting the panel room though, we're considering holding this event in a hotel room.
    Anyone interested?

  • If you do have it in a hotel room you should have a projector up and someone playing something like super mario world.

  • Good luck holding a panel and "publicly" consuming alcohol. You're going to have to do this in the privacy of a hotel room.

Speaking of which, here's a prime example of how to do something along the same lines... (Link)

  • The MAGFest website has a page all about their Idea Incubator. Basically, if you have an idea like a live-action MST3K (which is awesome) you can submit it and they may accomodate you with space, announcing it, or even a budget and you make it happen.

  • They already check IDs for everybody and put a colored wristband on you for age anyways (including 21+), so you might actually able to be able to pull something like this off as a panel of some type.

That's fine and dandy, but you're still consuming alcohol in a "public function space". If anyone has actually drank booze during a panel/performance, it's only because they snuck said activity by and it wasn't found out about until afterwards/on YouTube.

It's a lot easier to just hold such a function in the privacy of your hotel room/suite.

  • its like this...

technically the gaylord allows us to have alcohol in magfest areas (panel rooms and such) ONLY IF said alcohol was purchased within the gaylord. this is for reasons of capitalism, but also liability. the gaylord doesnt allow outside food and drink because if you get crippled by some rotten chinese food, you can sue the gaylord since they exist, and god bless america, lawsuits for everyone!

sooo.... alcohol is not permitted at magfest. period.

this is how we deal with the many complicated issues that come up with attempting to enforce the gaylord rules, keeping our own asses legal and properly licensed, and all that shit.

now... in some rare cases we will give special permission for a panel to involve alcohol, but its very rare and requires personal attention from high level magfest staff, communication with the gaylord, etc. pain in the ass.

it is also true that people just go ahead and do things sometimes. it happens, its not like we can really do anything about it, and honestly we dont give too much of a shit... but *IF* it becomes a problem, we have to come down hard on it. if someone does something un-authorized at magfest involving alcohol, we may have to go as far as turning them over to cops, kicking them out of the hotel, etc... and we really dont want to do that, so... watch your ass. be careful, be reasonable, and above all, DO NOT try to pull off any stupid shit and then turn into a dick about it. magfest is full of people doing silly shit. as soon as someone does something so stupid that we have to deal with it, especially if they're being pricks about it, we very quickly just boot them out the door and let other authorities deal with them. there are a few every year. dont be one of them. =]
